(WHO I AM)
Hi, my name is Sanjay Parker and I’m a producer. I primarily like to work on live multi-media projects, but I have experience in festivals, film, theatre, and event management. I believe that art and media should be used to make difficult or taboo topics more approachable and easier to talk about– sweeten the pill to make it easier to swallow, so to speak.
I divide my professional work between the 3 P’s: Purpose, Profit, and Play. Purpose work is designed to have a net positive impact in the world, such as projects dedicated to climate change or social justice. Profit work allows me to focus on the other P’s while still living in Toronto. Play work are the projects that I enjoy, often side-projects. The goal is to work a job which encompasses all three.
In high-school, I attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA), where I majored in Drama. ESA had a huge influence on me, opening my eyes up to the world of culture and introducing me to many artists to this day. In 2013, I attended the University of Waterloo. While I spent 4 years there, I had the opportunity to study a variety of subjects, including economics, physics, and knowledge integration. Lastly, in 2017, I did a post-grad certificate at Humber College in Arts Administration & Cultural Management under the fantastic Anne Frost.
My experiences thus far have taught me to be proficient in 5 main qualities:
1. Interpersonal – To work diplomatically in a team and provide services to others.
2. Administrative – Applications such as Excel, Google Suite, Sage 50, and Adobe Cloud.
3. Organizational – To keep efficient records and communicate data easily.
4. Technical – The knowledge needed to produce and explain ideas.
5. Practical – The requirements and understanding for producing a project.
Outside of work, I have many interests. I am the biggest soccer fan you know, and I play Ultimate Frisbee at a semi-professional level, currently for ROY (summer 2019). I have been a percussionist since I was 5 years old, starting with the Tabla but becoming capable in the drumkit. I also like dogs, reading, and biking.
Climate change is the greatest threat mankind has ever faced and I believe that each one of us has a responsibility to alleviate that threat. Personally, I commit to live a lifestyle with a small carbon footprint and I will eagerly join any arts project that could help address that threat.
When I was young, someone told me that “if you don’t build your own dreams, someone else will hire you to build theirs”, and ever since, my goal has been to Build Dreams. I hope we can work together soon!
